Velvetbean (Mucana pruniens)
Plant Characteristics: Annual vine with group of three large leaflets and clusters of white to purple flowers. Hairs are usually found in well-developed pods.
Establishment: Well adapted to the sandy soils in the southern part of the state. Plant from February to March at a rate of 30 lb/ac. Velvetbean was typically intercropped between rows of maize to improve soil fertility in maize and cotton rotations in the southern states
Fertilization: Tolerant to acidity and low fertility. Application 200 pounds per acre of 0-20-20 is recommended.
Grazing/Hay Management: Velvetbean can be used as pasture or green manure. Moderate grazing can be done from May to August.
