Mississippi Forages

Carpetgrass (Axomopus affinis)

Plant Characteristics: Low-growing stoloniferous perennial with hairy collar and ligule. Leaf blades are short and seed has 2 to 5 spikes.

Establishment: Carpetgrass is adapted to the central and southern part of the state and very tolerant to wet soils.

Fertilization: Adapted to low fertility and not very responsive to nitrogen.

Grazing/Hay Management: Major use is pasture due to the low-growing habit and allows for close grazing. Forage productivity is very low. Most production occurs from May to August with yields ranging from to tons/ac.
