Corn
How can I estimate corn yield?
You can estimate corn yield by randomly collecting several parameters in a field. The accuracy of this estimation is very dependent upon random selection of enough ears and locations to obtain an average of field conditions. Different values for seed weight may be used to characterize field conditions.
The formula for estimating corn yield is:
Yield (bu./a.) = (# of
ears in 1/1000 acre)(avg. # of kernel rows/ear)(avg. # of kernels/row)(avg.
value for seed weight)
Example: (22 ears in 1/1000 acre)(15.75 kernel rows/ear)(34 kernels/row)(0.013) = 153 bu./a.
Row length which equals 1/1000
acre:
17'5" in 30" rows
13'9" in 38" rows
13'1" in 40" rows
Values for seed weight:
0.013 = Good irrigated corn, very little stress during grain filling
0.01116 = Average standard value
0.009 = Stressed dryland corn
