Corn in Mississippi

What does the milk-line look like?

Photo of corn's milklineThe milkline is the borderline between the bright, clear yellow color of the seed coat overlying the hard starch layer, compared to the milky, dull yellow of the seed coat overlying dough layer.

To observe the milk line, break a corn cob in half and observe the crosssection of the top half of the ear (which is the bottom side of the kernels). This photo shows the milkline halfway down the kernels. Since it takes approximately 20 days for the milk-line to progress from the kernel tip to the base, it will take about another 10 days to reach physiological maturity. Thus, this field needs to irrigated enough to supply moisture for 10 more days.
