The excessive rainfall in September and October has significantly impacted rice production in Mississippi. The heavy rainfall has increased the level of lodging which raises the cost of harvesting the crop and reduces overall yield. Also, flooding has occurred in areas of the state where rice has gone under water. Quality of the rice crop has suffered as well due to excessive sprouting of the rice seed. Currently, it is estimated that five percent of the crop will be abandoned. Yield and quality loss estimates associated with the heavy rainfall would be in the 5 to 10 percent range.
