Project Title: United Way PSA
Team members Bo Bell, Billy Doughty, Leslie McKee, Kane Overstreet, and Lynn Timbrook will produce a public service announcement for the United Way of North Central Mississippi. This PSA will hopefully increase awareness of this organization in the community so the annual fund raising campaign goals will be met. When the fundraising campaign goals are not met, many of the requests for financial support by local organizations cannot be funded. This United Way chapter supports twenty-one agencies in Oktibbeha, Choctaw, Clay, and Winston counties.
Project Title: Symphony Under the Stars
Team members Michelle Amos, Shane Grantham, and Jerry Toney have a vision to create a family oriented, community event that provides an opportunity for many people to experience the sights and sounds of a symphony orchestra. This event will not only add to the quality of life of the area, but also give the Mississippi State University/Starkville Symphony the exposure it needs to help sustain its existence.
Project Title: The Johnny Cash Flower Pickin’ Festival
Team members Barbara Adkins, Dennis Bock, Rob Jenkins, Robbie Ward, and Jason Barrett are organizing what is expected to be an annual festival for the City of Starkville. The legendary country music singer performed in Starkville in May 1965 and was arrested after the show for public intoxication or “pickin’ flowers” as he called it. As a tribute to Cash’s clash with the law in this North Mississippi town, the festival will be a three-day event designed to build community and establish a culture that area residents can call their own.
