Mississippi 4-H ATV Safety
ATV Safety Institute (ASI ) Safety RiderCourse
The 4-H ATV RiderCourse is a great way to get young people and adults off to a safe start. A parent must be present for riders under 12; parents are encouraged to be present for riders under 16.
Mississippi currently has seven extension county level agents and one state 4-H specialist as ASI-licensed instructors to deliver the ASI ATV RiderCourse to counties and communities in each of the four Extension regions. The goals for the program include the following:
- Provide hands-on training to youth and adult participants.
- Provide the educational experiences needed to develop critical thinking skills and good decision-making skills.
- Change negative ATV-related behaviors.
- Reduce the number of ATV-related injuries and deaths in Mississippi.
About the ATV Safety Institute (ASI) 4-H ATV RiderCourse Training
The hands-on, half-day 4-H ATV RiderCourse is conducted by licensed ATV Safety Institute instructors. The course offers students the following:
- An opportunity to increase safety knowledge.
- Practice in basic riding skills in a controlled environment under the direct supervision of a licensed Instructor.
- A pre-ride inspection, starting and stopping, quick turns, hill riding, emergency stopping and swerving and riding over obstacles.
- Information about protective gear, local regulations, places to ride and environmental concerns.
