Forestry Demonstration Area Established

Sign

A forestry demonstration site has been established for Greene County forest landowners. The site is located on Stringfellow Road in the southeastern portion of the county. The demonstration area is one of many projects associated with the Enhanced Forestry Education Program funded through Public Law 106-393 by the Greene County Board of Supervisors. The Mississippi State University Extension Service conducts the program. Other projects include educational programs, scholarships, and youth programs.

The demonstration site features longleaf and loblolly pine planted in a pasture with different types of site preparation and follow-up treatments. To visit the site, drive south from Leakesville on Highway 63 for 8 miles to Stringfellow Road, which is just north of the George County line. Turn left and look for the pictured sign.

Greene County landowners are encouraged to visit the site several times over the next few years to learn which site preparation treatment is most beneficial for pines planted in pasture sod. The comparison between the longleaf and the loblolly pine will also be interesting to watch.

The demonstration site has been established by Mississippi State University Extension Service Foresters Dr. Glenn Hughes, Butch Bailey and Don Bales.
